100 Posts, What I've Learned So Far...

Hey all!  Ok, seriously, I can't believe that I've made it to 100 posts already!  I originally started this blog to keep my family up to date on my life after I moved to Peoria.  It turned out that I had started this blog a little early, so I didn't have much to really talk about.  We hadn't even chosen a builder yet for our new house.

The original Beauty and the Greek
I was also pretty into my new love of running, so I started talking more and more about my training for upcoming races.  While I'm kind of in a running slump now, I'm hoping that once I'm able to get outside, it will come back.  I think I need a good race to get me back into the groove of things.

Besides moving to Peoria and running, I also started blogging about things that I liked to read about.  Fashion, interior design, makeup and hair...ya know, super gender neutral topics. :)  I started sharing my Favorite Things and later, created a linkup. (Next linkup March 3rd FYI)

So, in 100 posts, here are a few things that I've learned so far:

Don't post for the sake of posting.

I think it's super easy to get caught up in the whole, "I post on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays" thing.  Then, you're searching for something to post about, and it's not really even worth sharing.  I try to write down post ideas as soon as I can, and put them on a calendar.  I will switch things around and get them done whenever I have time.  This blog is supposed to be fun, so I don't stress about it if I don't have a post for a week.

What do you like to read?

When starting this blog, I thought about the blogs that I liked to read.  What did I like that they did that I could incorporate into mine?  For me, I like blogs that talk about a little bit of everything.  Which brings me to my next point...

Don't pigeon hole yourself.

The blogs that are only about fashion, I find myself wondering about their personal lives.  The people who blog about financial stuff, but run and never talk about it...I always want to hear more about their running.  I feel like a lot of blogging advice out there tells you to pick a theme and stick to it, but I couldn't disagree more.

Followers.

I feel like worrying about followers is dangerous.  Sure, you can host giveaways, and that will definitely give you more followers.  But...are these people even reading your blog?  It makes you look like a bigger blog, but these are people who are entering for a purse, not because they like your content.  The coolest thing in the world is having a reader comment or email you and tell you that they like your blog and are now following.

Be genuine.

While I LOVE reading blogs where people show their perfect white desk, with their perfect planner, colored pens with gold spray painted pen caps (because they didn't like the finish on the other pen caps)....that isn't real life.  Maybe it is for them, but it is obvious when people portray their lives to be 100% perfect in blogs.  You aren't fooling anyone!  Be a real person!  I'm hoping that I'm genuine on here and share the real parts of life...not just the good ones. :)

Finally, I'd like to give a shout out to some bloggers who have befriended and supported me since the beginning.

I'm super sorry if I forgot anyone.  I've also made a ton of new blog friends in the mean time, and you all are awesome!

Do you blog?  What's your blog about? I'm always looking for new blogs to follow!

  2. Awww your too sweet! The only con to having a blog is not being able to meet the awesome ppl we meet through blogging! I couldn't agree more about having followers vs readers. I also agree about not writing about one topic. Write about what your passionate about and it may not interest everyone but it comes from the heart and at the end of the day we blog for us not for anyone else. Great post!!

  4. Happy 100th! My little ol' blog is getting pretty close to 100 posts as well. I love your advice and had several of the same things in mind when thinking about my 100th post. I do agree that getting to know new followers is the best feeling.

  6. Congratulations on 100 posts!! That's wonderful!! Totally agree that you should blog about life - and not get too concerned with the little things that other bloggers are doing!! I love reading your home updates, beauty stuff and running posts!! It's been great "getting to know you"....hope that came off less stalkerish than it sounded!!

  7. I totally agree with you...I like reading the blogs that talk about a little of everything, otherwise I wonder about other aspects of their life! I blog about a little bit of everything over at idowhatiwantblog.com

I'm with you on the quality, not quantity of followers being what's most important...mostly because I like to connect with other people and bloggers!

  8. This post is SPOT ON. You're awesome. I love what you say about followers and not putting yourself in a "theme." I disagree with that advice myself. ALSO... random, but that meme you have there of the creepy girl? That's my friend's sister in law! Hilarious, right? I only know that because she originally became semi internet famous when she submitted a video for Justin Beiber's video thing a year or so ago... she made it into the top five, and my friend was asking everyone to vote for her. Crazy! Anyway, great post. Keep it up!

  10. Happy 100th post! I love reading about your house updates and your running! It is such a inspiration that you have so many running accomplishments in such a short period of time. And I totally agree with pretty much everything in this post! Haha! The followers and giveway thing is nice but is it genuine? Also, the "theme" of your blog. Personally, I feel like my blog is all over the place most days, but I think it's pretty okay because that's my life! Can't wait to hear more about the house and running and your favorites!!

  11. Yayyyyy for 100 posts! This is a great 100th post because it's something that everyone should think about. I know that I should at least. I get so caught up in feeling like I NEED to post and I get so overwhelmed with all things blog.

  12. I couldn't agree with the points/tips/adivce more!! So true! Yay for 100 posts! Some days I think "I NEED to post on my blog" and then I snap back to reality and think, nah, I don't have to commit to it just because I haven't posted in a week! I don't really have a theme for my blog besides just sharing about life which I think is great because we can look back on that in years to come! :)

  13. Congrats on 100 posts! I totally agree with everything you said, especially not picking one "category" to blog about and about being real. My favorite blogs are the ones that I can relate to, so that's really important to me too.

  14. Congrats on #100! I surprised myself with hitting it at the end of December (I think) and honestly didn't pay much attention to my followers because I was already loving my random new friends that had been reading my little unknown blog in those newbie days.

This mornings post actually referenced my lack of a Monday post, but the short version is that I didn't have a solid message to share or vent or whatever, so I didn't write at all.
