Holy Sh*t, I'm Doing a Marathon...

...I think I'm gonna barf.  I'm pretty nervous.

It all started with my aunt and running buddy, Lana.  We started running together in the spring, and around May, decided that the family (Lana, my dad, George, and I) would do a half marathon.  At the time, my long runs were between six and eight miles.  I was nervous about finishing 13.1, and I couldn't even fathom 26.2.

In June, July, and August, we built up to 10 miles, then 13.1.  During our long runs, I'd hear my aunt mention her next marathon in December.  In the very back of my head, I couldn't help but think to myself, "If I kept adding mileage... I wonder if I could ever do that?"

George and I went on vacation, and I thought a lot about doing that marathon with my aunt.  Mostly, I shared my thoughts out loud, and poor George had to listen.
*By the end of this thing, George will also deserve a medal for having to listen to me complain, worry, plan, recap, celebrate, and whine.

On Friday night, I decided that I was going to do it.  I typed in my credit card number and said a prayer.  I'm officially registered for the Rocket City Marathon on December 14th in Huntsville, Alabama.  Just typing that out makes me want to throw up a little bit.


The next morning, I woke up at 3:50 to meet our running group at 5:00 to do 16 miles.  I had a rough time in the last two miles, but I think I've convinced myself that I can do this.  In January, I could barely run a mile without stopping, so I feel like I've come full circle.

I'm slow, even slower when running longer distances, but I don't really care.  Maybe some day I'll train for a marathon and have a specific time goal in mind.  For now, I just want to finish.  Specifically, finish under the six hour time limit they give you. :)  Getting kicked off the course would be a little demoralizing.

I have three months and a few days to figure out how I'm going to tack on the last 10 miles to that 16 miler I did on Saturday.  I think I can do it.  I have a couple of half marathons coming up, so that will give me good racing and pacing practice.  I plan on doing a few more 16's, 18's, and a 20 (if not two), before then.

So, until then, I'll be blogging about my runs, begging for tips from all of you experienced marathoners out there, and trying not to get injured.  As my dad says, "It is so much fun to do something you never thought was possible."

  1. That's amazing that beginning of this year you could barely run 1 mile and now you can do 16!! What an inspiration! I hate running so unfortunately I won't be following in your footsteps but it just goes to show if you put your mind to it and work hard you can achieve anything. So cool!! I'm rooting for ya!

  3. Oohhhhhhhh that's awesome! Congrats! Scary but so awesome! Injury prevention is so important!! I'm sure you'll dominate all the training runs and finish under 6 hours!!

  6. Signing up is the hardest part!! Such a great story. My advice is to stretch as much as possible and build up mileage slowly. I have had my fair share of injures and I always look back and realize its from doing too much too soon.
